Linocut

Linocut style calendar for 2027

To make a linocut, an artist carves away a sheet of linoleum and inks what remains, which leads to bold shapes and few colours. Linocut Harbour borrows that language for gulls, a lighthouse and lobster pots in navy, orange and cream. It is one generated image, not a hand-pulled print, in several editions.

7 finished calendars, all using one original artwork: Linocut Harbour. They are editions of the same picture, with different dates or languages, and each listing says which it is.

Why few colours print so well

With large flat areas and a short palette, this style forgives modest equipment. Even uncoated office paper gives a pleasantly dry, inky result, closer to a real relief print than glossy stock would be. Bear in mind that the navy covers a lot of the sheet and will use plenty of ink.

Choosing a panel colour from the palette

Carved lines are busy behind small numbers, so this design places its months on separate panels. A cream panel echoes the unprinted paper of a real linocut. In the studio you can pick your own overlay colour and move the months to the left, right or bottom.
